L-R-G: Organically Correct

Over the years, very few streetwear brands have survived the shifts in the economy, and of those, very few have been able to expand their lines beyond where they started. In just under a decade, L-R-G has gone beyond the stereotypical label of “streetwear,” offering an entire lifestyle that their core consumers could grow with.

Through the process of developing relationships with rising celebrities, the L-R-G team has unleashed campaigns so outside the box that they have actually set a standard for creative advertising. Additionally, the people who wear L-R-G are phenomenally committed to the brand, almost as if they had a stake in the company themselves.

We spoke with L-R-G Brand Manager Kevin Delaney about the ideals behind the clothing, the ways they strategize the right relationships and their inspiration to create a global lifestyle.

AllHipHop.com: Now that L-R-G is in its ninth year of business, what do you feel are the company's biggest accomplishments thus far?

Kevin Delaney: Maintaining a strong team with the same goals.

AllHipHop.com: Since the odds are against businesses surviving long-term, what has been the biggest challenge you've overcome thus far? You've had phenomenal growth, but are there any concerns for L-R-G with the nation's current economy?

Kevin Delaney: Of course there are concerns, but now is actually a great time to move past all your competitors or whoever you are up against. While every other company is pulling back on budgets, we feel this is our time to push even further ahead and take over a lot of in-store retail space. Stay in peoples face and let people know we are a brand for the future.

AllHipHop.com: The company has had some interesting campaigns over the years. What are some of your favorites?

Kevin Delaney: First off, The Roots’ campaign was nuts, they were the first “big time” artists we featured. I was still super young and bugging out on them because they are legends. This pretty much let people know we have arrived. The lay out and artwork was crazy. If you look at the ad, ?uestlove is drumming on a drum set we doctored up and put all types of foliage on it to give it that organic fell. He started doing a mini drum solo on the plant-covered drums; it was surreal.

In addition, all of our campaigns, brand alignment with Just Blaze has been a blessing as well. His ads just “work.” The synergy between him and L-R-G is seamless. We have done three different campaigns with him, and they have all been very different but all equally effective. He has been our #1 brand ambassador over the years, and would like to shout him out now!

The last campaign would have to be when we ran Clinton Portis. He was the first big time athlete we ran with. He took a chance with us potentially jeopardizing his Nike contract, so he showed us crazy love on that one. He had to wear a Nike hat in the ad to make it legit. Big shout to CP as well!

AllHipHop.com: You've had several celebrities involved in campaigns, from more well known artists like Kanye West, Jim Jones, Bun B and The Roots to underground MC's like Living Legends and Planet Asia, and brand new artists like B.o.B. You've also involved DJ's, actors and skaters. How do you determine which celebrities will represent your brand?

Kevin Delaney: The selection process is a collaborative effort within our department and company. We are all constantly looking for new artists, skaters, DJs, basket weavers, producers, etc… we like to run classic, legendary artists as well as shining the light on the “underground” or that new “up-and-comer.”

And for the record, we ran Kanye West in spring of 2003, which means we shot the pictures in 2002, way before he was a “well known” artist. But basically, as long as you are doing something fresh and new while changing and/or influencing the game you are in, then you are definitely a candidate for L-R-G.

AllHipHop.com: L-R-G is one of the few companies that has been truly successful in cross-branding your line. Your T-Mobile Sidekick did very well. You also currently have the G-Shock "Time Is Money" watch, the Dainese motorcycle jacket, Monster iPhone holder, camo Fit Bike, K.O.A.B. ATV, Suzuki Hayabusa sportsbike, Forum snowboard and Special Blend coats. How do you decide which companies to partner with?

Kevin Delaney: The company has to be a leader in their respective field, such as G-Shock and T-Mobile. Or the collaboration must enhance the L-R-G brand in some way or form or shed light on us in an industry where people might not think of us or notice us.

AllHipHop.com: Who are the members of your L-R-G Skateboard team? How do you work with the team to promote the brand through events/appearances?

Kevin Delaney: Tyrone Romero is the Team Manager. We have pro skaters Karl Watson, Rob Gonzalez, Chico Brenes, Rodrigo TX, Adelmo Jr. and Jack Curtin, also amateur skaters Kelly Hart and Rodrigo Petersen. We market our skate team through international and domestic touring, in-store signings, demos, skate videos and magazine print ads.

AllHipHop.com: At times you've got some nature-inspired images on your shirts. Is that intentionally to be eco-friendly?

Kevin Delaney: The cycle of nature mimics the cycle of our company. We are continually growing yet or roots stay grounded. We bring the underground or counter-culture ideas and influences, or whatever you want to call it, and bring it the mainstream. The tree is our logo and pretty much describes this phenomenon.

AllHipHop.com: If you had to pick one L-R-G design or collection as your favorite of all time, what would it be and why?

Kevin Delaney: The Rawkus Records Soundbombing II x L-R-G Varsity jacket.

AllHipHop.com: Do you have big plans for your 10-year anniversary next year?

Kevin Delaney: Maybe a tour, maybe a compilation album, maybe a chicken wing eating contest… who knows?!

A Man's Supposed Past Will Never Define His Legacy

Miami, FL. – In the past couple of weeks that has passed certain photos were posted on mediatakeout.com exhibiting Rick Ross as an apparent correctional officer. Oddly enough, Trick Daddy has come forth and taken responsibility for the posted photo all according to mediatakeout.com staff members. The question now is, will this insinuate a sudden controversy and cause havoc amongst the Miami movement? At present time, we still stand by our initial report; The Boss was never a correctional officer.

24hourhiphop.com recently scanned through all our community users' comments and would have to disagree with certain individuals. Whether or not Ross was a CO or not, his past should not reflect his legacy, his lyrics, his music, his certifiable hits. Ever since his debut, he has been providing fans with chart toppers, club joints that have given the people something to bump to. Don't get us wrong, we are not trying to provide you a bio, we are describing his trill history. With that being said, this is only a phase in his long prosperous music career, dedicated fans will understand and know the truth. No photoshoped picture can change his credibility.

At press time, his third studio LP, 'Deeper than Rap,' will be released sometime this summer, as well as Carol City Cartel's debut album. Be on the lookout for new material from both Ross and Triple C in the next upcoming month.

Let's be honest for a second here, that photo looks obviously photoshoped. Haters will do anything to discredit anybody from what they initially accomplished in life. Rick Ross bought Miami back to the forefront where many people have failed, hence why he was practically featured in almost every hit song of 2007 and 2008.

DMX Arrested for Using Counterfeit ID

Phoenix, AZ – In yet another unsurprising apprehension for the ex-Ruff Ryder artist, another day in the life of DMX's police files. However, this marks his fourth arrest within the same month. This one stems from an incident that occurred in April.

DMX was arrested in Phoenix's Arizona Metrocenter Mall on Saturday (July 19) on suspicion of using a fake ID in a Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. Sometime in April, X went to the clinic to undergo a nine hour treatment. Upon checking out, sources say he used a false name of "Troy Jones," a fake Social Security number, a non-existent address in Yonkers, New York, and false emergency contact information of a made-up girlfriend in the name of "Jennifer Martinez." NEWS: On the Clock Report: July 21, 2008

Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arapaio initiated the fourth arrest for X and left this statement to the media concerning his circumstance.

"He seems to have a long record and nothing ever happens. I am concerned that these judges keep letting him get out. I don't know how many times he has to be booked into jail. He keeps committing all these violations and keeps getting out and continues to violate the law. He has lived a charmed life."

At press time, X is facing charges of identity theft in what authorities said was an attempt to allude $7,500 in medical bills. After his arrest, he was placed into isolation for his own personal safety on Sunday (July 20) at the Towers Jail, where he is being held on $60,000 bond.

I honestly have no more comments for this man. How the hell do you go from a top selling artist to a habitual lawbreaker? And why does he keep going back to Arizona knowing that he got problems in that state. He need to go back to NY.

50 Cent to be Allowed to go on Vacation with Son

Central Islip, NY – In the latest non-music related news concerning the leader of the G-Unit camp, 50 Cent was recently requested to pass a mandatory court-ordered drug test before he would be allowed to take his 11-year old son, Marquise Jackson, on a vacation trip in the following month.

Ironically, Fif passed his required drug test and is now allowed to take his son on vacation. His son Marquise lives with his mother, Shaniqua Tompkins in Long Island.

On the real, it's quite obvious he burnt down his baby mama's house to claim insurance, plus the lady tried getting more money from him in child support.

two genes may prevent people from contracting HIV

Scientists have isolated two genes which may prevent people from contracting HIV or at least slow the rate at which they develop AIDS, a new study has found.

The genes were isolated by comparing the genetic profiles of people in their first year of HIV infection with those who managed to resist infection despite repeated exposure to the virus.

The "good" versions of the two genes were present in 12.2 percent of those who resisted infection compared with only 2.7 of patients in primary HIV infection.

Researchers are not yet sure how this protection works.

One of the genes codes for a receptor on the surface of the immune system's natural killer cells which destroy infected cells in the body.

The other codes for a protein which binds the first gene and dampens the natural killer cell activity.

The most likely explanation is that HIV prevents the protein that dampens the killer cell activity from being expressed, allowing the killer cells to destroy cells infected with HIV.

Since this can happen very soon after the initial infection, people carrying those genes may be able to more efficiently destroy infected cells and lower their chances of developing AIDS.

"More research is needed to determine the exact mechanism behind the protection we have observed, but these findings have revealed a promising avenue," said co-author Nicole Bernard of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal.

"In the future, our findings could be used to somehow 'boost' the innate immune system and thus fight the virus as soon as it enters the body."

The study was published Wednesday in the journal AIDS.

NFL Hiring Experts To Spot Gang Signals"

Concerned that some of its players are flashing signals related to street gangs, the National Football League has hired experts to examine game tapes and identify the hand gestures, a newspaper reported Wednesday. "There have been some suspected things we"ve seen," NFL vice president of security Milt Ahlerich told the Los Angeles Times. "When we see it, we quietly jump on it immediately, directly with the team and the player or employee involved to cease and desist. Period."

Ahlerich says the NFL has long warned its players about the influence of gangs. Concern intensified after Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was gunned down following an altercation involving known gang members in 2007.

The concern was raised with first-year players at the recent rookie symposium, and a video on the dangers of gangs was shown to every player in the league last year.

"Guys come from all over the country, and who knows what they"re really doing?" Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Dennis Northcutt told the paper
